LOCOROTONDO
One of the most beautiful cities in Italy, and awarded with the orange flag of the Touring Club of Italy, sits high on a plateau in the south-eastern part of the Murgia of Trulli in the heart of the Itria Valley, less than 10 km (6 miles) from Alberobello.
His very name ( "round place") suggests the circular feature of the historic city center. Its origins date back to around 1000, when the farmers have built a number of simple houses, including typical "cummerse" (small houses with gabled roofs), on top of the hill.
Rising above the center of the expanse of pure white houses, they are the steeples of the many churches in the city, including the Addolorata Church, Holy Spirit, St. Nicholas, St. Rocco and Our Lady of the Chain. The Church of Santa Maria della Greca boasts a Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Our Lady of the Roses, as well as a group of sculptures depicting St. George on horseback.
The wine route through the Itria Valley makes a stop in Locorotondo, which produces an excellent white wine DOC.
